The international division of labor originates from a long historical evolution beginning in the 17th century with the rise of nation-states in Western Europe and their competition to conquer territories and establish empires. This political domination, combined with the development of modern industry and technology due to the Industrial Revolution, has shaped the current division between developed and less developed countries. Modern industry, technology, production, and income are concentrated in developed countries (Global North), whereas less developed countries (Global South) mainly specialize in agriculture and extractive industries.en_US
