Boundedness of Per Capita Consumption Stream Through Time/حدود تدفق الاستهلاك للفرد عبر الزمن

Abstract

The study discusses the boundedness of per capita consumption stream through time, indicating that recent analyses suggest that, in the absence of technical progress and population control, an economy faces the "impossibility of achieving sustained and unbounded increases in its per capita consumption stream." This finding has significant implications for capital-short underdeveloped economies, as it suggests that capital accumulation alone cannot free these economies from the low per capita consumption trap. The purpose of this article is first to present a simple exposition of this so-called "impossibility theorem." Secondly, an attempt will be made to assess how valid this theorem truly is. Thirdly, some comments will be provided on how the entire discussion is of academic nature concerning present-day underdeveloped countries. Finally, the roles of technical progress and population control will be discussed.
