The history of the National Bank of Egypt dates back to its establishment as one of the leading commercial banks in the country, later transformed into a central bank under Law No. 57 of 1951. This transformation was part of the state's efforts to strengthen the banking system and provide a structured legal framework, which was embodied in the issuance of the Banking and Credit Law No. 163 of 1957 and the Central Bank of Egypt Law No. 200 of 1960. On the other hand, Bank Misr underwent significant changes after its nationalization and transfer of ownership to the state, leading to its merger with several other banks like Port Said Bank and the Belgian and International Bank. This approach was part of the state's policy to unify banking efforts and enhance the competitiveness of the banking sector.
