This research deals with the issue of the energy mix in Egypt and its compatibility with the sustainable development requirements. The current situation in Egypt shows high energy production and consumption as well as high rates of economic and population growth and the need for new structure for both energy production and consumption in Egypt to cover the requirements of sustainable development. The research analyzed the current structure of energy production and consumption in Egypt and its relationship with the current pattern of development, evaluated strategies and policies of energy management in Egypt which shows lack of coordination and integration between petroleum sector and electricity sector, and extracted the determinants of the optimal mix of energy from expertise of other countries. The study also conceptualized an energy mix under three alternative development scenarios for Egypt using a quantitative model “LEAP” to estimate both energy supply and demand under each proposed scenario. The results found out that the scenario of sustainable development is the best scenario.
