Abstract

These lecture notes were prepared for a course on optimization theory at the Institute of National Planning, Cairo, UAR. They aim to introduce participants to the fundamental results of optimization theory, presenting complete and rigorous statements and proofs of theorems often missing or incomplete in other texts. The notes emphasize fostering a mathematical way of thinking, which is particularly useful in fields like social sciences where assumptions must be minimal and precise. While written in a non-uniform style to accommodate a broad audience, this may result in some parts being overly detailed for advanced readers. Optimization theory is now becoming a distinct branch of mathematics, consolidating results previously dispersed across applications in economics, engineering, and aeronautics.
